How to have a productive day

Hello, my name’s Megan and I’m a procrastinator.

It’s probably one of my worst traits, I find it so hard to just get something done and will find every reason not to. I have to work really hard to make sure all the things I need to get done throughout the day actually get done.

How does a procrastinator do that?

Get up early. This doesn’t have to be a silly time but even on weekends, I get up early. I find if I’m up and out I’m much more likely to get things done rather than laze around watching TV.

Make a list. To do lists can be overwhelming and counter-productive. Try listing just one thing that must get done that day and 2 or 3 other things that you would like to get done. Less pressure. More productivity.

Just do. The more you think about not doing something, the more likely you will find a reason not to do it. Whether it is having to do that 5k in the rain or making a call at work to that awful client, don’t think about it. Just start the action. It might be getting ready for the run, or dialling the number. But once you just start the physical action, it’s a lot easier to complete the task.

Avoid distractions. Distractions are the frenemy of a procrastinator. Your smartphone with constant updates, other people, the bird sitting outside the window. You will find anything to keep you from the task at hand. If you really need to get something done, get yourself somewhere quiet, put your phone to aeroplane mode and get it done.

Listen to music. Sometimes, you might need a silent room to get things done, some people can listen to heavy metal and concentrate (I have no idea how). But if you want some music it has been clinically proven that classical music helps concentration levels. Spotify has some good playlists in this genre.
