How to start your blog (by a new blogger)

I probably thought about starting my blog for nearly three years before I finally did it. I half started it once, writing a very passionate and moving (I thought) blog about commitment. And then didn’t write for nearly a year.

I don’t think this is necessarily a bad thing. I mean, yes, I would have had 2 or 3 years to build up my blog but by thinking about it for so long, I know how much it means to me and now I have started it, I can’t stop thinking about it. It’s also a much better time for me personally to start sharing things about my life.

Here are some tips based on my journey so far.

  • Just write. Don’t worry about the style, or the name etc. On WordPress you can choose a basic style and don’t have to spend any money. Once you know it is something you want to do, you can always change it. Just write something. Chances are, hardly anyone will read it anyway. The more you write, the easier it will be.
  • Take the time. Take time to read other people’s blogs and comment/like but only when you mean it. The blogging community – as I have recently discovered – are a friendly and welcoming bunch. By reading other people’s blogs, you’ll discover what you like reading and therefore what you enjoy writing about. You’ll also learn a tonne of tips on writing!
  • Carry a notebook with you! I always have ideas about blogs I can write at random times so I make a note in my notebook and refer back to it. Of course, you can also write this on your Notes app on your phone – but notebooks are cute!
  • Be personal. Don’t try and be like someone else – they are already doing that. The beauty of blogging is that it is so individual as everyone brings something slightly different whether it is in their style of writing, experience or images. Embrace you!

As I said, I am still learning and would love to hear any other tips.

Or good luck on your blog and I hope this helps you with getting started!
